What’s the anatomy of a decision?

I am the proud owner of a standing desk. I’ve had it for about 6 weeks now and I LOVE it.

I stand up to coach and feel both more grounded and more flexible. I am less tired at the end of the day - less crunched up.

I get a ridiculous sense of joy when I press the button to move it up and down!

So, how did I make the decision to get one?

In some ways it took me under an hour. I googled best standing desk; and most said the same thing. I ordered it that day, channelling one of Gretchen Rubin’s Secrets of Adulthood - that most decisions don’t require extensive research.

And yet…

In reality the decision was the result of a series of tiny building blocks over time.

When I look back, I can see that I had been circling around the idea for at least 2 years. Exploring it and then putting it down. Filing away bits of information related to it without reaching a tipping point.

I went through a gradual process, from becoming aware that they even existed, to noticing them everywhere.

From thinking they weren’t for me, to testing things out – a high risk stack of books under my laptop, and adjustable laptop stand.

I gradually acclimatised to each stage, and built my way forward. I listened to people wax lyrical about the benefits. I realised I was jealous of people that could switch from sitting to standing at the touch of a button.

I hurt my back and realised it wasn’t helpful to be spending a lot of time sitting with my legs crossed.

In a coach forum discussion about best office chairs, someone offered a different solution - a standing desk.

Many other different people contributed a thought and inspired me along the way.

Likely none of them know that they were part of my decision, but each was a piece of the puzzle that gradually built over time.

Each of these pieces of insight and experience were part of my decision.

So, if you are working your way towards a decision and aren’t there yet, have a think about where you might be along the journey.

Trust you are building it piece by piece.

Often the last piece of the puzzle will land when it needs to.

PS: I have a Flexispot Standing Desk Pro Series E7. I bought the frame only and re-used the top from my old one. I would wholeheartedly recommend 😊

Wishing you all a great week,
