Running and I have had an interesting relationship over the last 30 years.
We’ve been all in and fully off, we’ve fallen in and out of love, there have been break ups and injuries and fresh starts.
There’s a lot of history.
We first met at university, more of a fling than anything serious.
We fully committed to each other while working on Lucozade Sport - what a magical time! The right place with the right people to bring out the best in us.
We struggled through having children, trying to get back to where we were and realising (over and over again!) that we needed to work differently but never quite working out how.
After limping through another 3 marathons, we broke up. It really felt like the end. Even a Couch to 5K couldn’t rekindle the spark.
And yet, here we are, again.
Except this time, we’re older and wiser, and we’re not rushing in or trying to recreate what we had.
We’re going to date for a while, and find out if we’re a good fit to be together and how to make it work for where we are.
We’ve already agreed that this isn’t about marathons (we have finally learned that lesson!), or PBs, or challenge. We love those people - we admire them SO much and we really want to be them - but it’s not us.
The rest we’ll figure out as we go, taking it step by step and checking in along the way - can we have a different kind of relationship that learns from our past and builds for the future?
And can it be fun along the way?
Is there something in your life that you want to rekindle?
And what needs to be different this time around?
Wishing you a week of informed rekindling,
