As a child we are often asked what we want to be when we grow up, and the answer for so many of us is…
“I don’t know yet”.
As an adult we are often asked where we want to be in 10 years time, and the answer for so many of us is…
“I don’t know yet”.
We don’t have a crystal ball.
We don’t have control over so many things that could happen.
We perhaps haven’t even thought about it.
And perhaps we don’t want to, because of the risk it might not turn out the way we planned.
And yet… even if you don’t - and really can’t - know exactly where you will be, and what you will be doing, it can still be super useful to map out a ten year timeline.
It can give us a window to look through and see what might be possible.
It can give us an insight into what we want in our lives and how we might want to be living it.
It can give us a practical context to reflect on (this last one can be a gamechanger. Often the biggest shift I see is when people realise how old they will be in 10 years time!).
I first did this exercise over a decade ago. With no crystal ball and no sense of what might happen at that point it emerged remarkably close to what I had let myself dream about.
It’s time for me to do another one of these. And maybe for you too?
And perhaps compare notes with the other people we share our lives with to start a conversation about what we want to create next.
Because until we map it out and see the phases and stages that might be coming up it remains unthought about.
Do you have a 10 year timeline?
And what might mapping out open up?
Wishing you all a wonderful week,
