What kind of plant are you?

A close up of the top of a palm tree, showing the fronds and flower buds. In the background is blue sky, other plants and a slatted wooden fence screen.

Our long-suffering palm tree is finally about to flower after years of ups and downs.

We bought it with high hopes and great expectations for how it would grow and what it would look like. Instead, it gradually wilted and browned and declined.

We couldn’t work it out. It was supposed to be a good one for our garden and everyone else’s looked amazing. Why wasn’t it living up to its potential? What was wrong with it? Had we bought a bad plant?

Turns out there was nothing wrong with the plant.

A lack of water had dried it out, leading to a build-up of dead leaves stifling new growth.

Funnily enough when we* gave it what it needed, it started to recover. It wasn’t a bad plant - it simply wasn’t getting what it needed.

Like plants, we need the right conditions and care to grow and thrive.

  • Sometimes we’re in the right place but not being watered in the right way.

  • Sometimes we’re in the wrong place and all the watering in the world won’t make a difference.

  • Sometimes it’s both.

There’s nothing wrong with us - we simply need to adjust our conditions or our care to bring out the best in us.

If you were a plant, which one would you be?

And what conditions and core nutrients would you need to grow and thrive - and maybe even flower?

* I say we, but it was all down to my lovely husband. Sometimes we need someone to notice that we’re wilting and take the time to figure out what we might need. It’s hard to do it on our own.

Wishing you all a week of thriving with the right care,
