I have been a great completer finisher in my life.
Sometimes when it really would have been wiser to stop.
I’ve trained through injury, I’ve stayed too long in roles that no longer fit me, I’ve chosen to ‘push through’ when really, I needed to stop and regroup.
I’ve also started things that felt like a wonderful idea at the time - before I realised what the process would be like - and then felt I had to see it through.
So, it’s been a complete gift to realise that I don’t have to finish everything I start.
And that I often learn just as much from the things I stop as the things I complete.
It’s all useful data.
Sometimes we start something with one hypothesis and discover something different along the way.
Sometimes a habit that worked for a long time isn’t useful anymore.
Sometimes the circumstances of our life shift and our priorities change.
Sometimes an idea that felt really exciting in theory (like making this patchwork quilt), loses its energy in reality.
Once we’ve started, we realise it’s not for us.
And that’s absolutely fine.
It can be easy to feel like we’ve wasted time, money, or energy if we don’t see something through.
But as long as we learn from it - and apply that learning to what’s next - surely that’s successful?
We’re either winning or learning :-)
Wishing you all a week of choosing what you finish, and what you don’t,
