When I was little I used to love to move my room around.
I had all the same stuff, but in a different place.
It gave me a real sense of satisfaction, and made everything feel better.
So it’s been a complete joy to realise that I can do the same thing with time!
I’ve noticed that when I feel like I need more time, often I simply have it in the wrong places.
A good reshuffle of my schedule really helps - switching up my diary so each day has a different flow, shifting the timing of my dog walk, creating dedicated time for a project, always giving myself time to transition in between.
My life can feel infinitely better when I rearrange the building blocks of my day.
Harnessing this approach has also been useful in a number of coaching sessions recently:
With someone who was feeling exhausted at the end of each week we changed the structure of it - from what was effectively two marathons and a rest day, to a series of sprints and recoveries.
With another who was finding a particular day stressful and challenging, we explored what it would look like if they were starting from scratch. Simply moving a start time back released the pressure and opened up a much more energising schedule.
With someone who was struggling to find the time for important but not urgent work, we time blocked their day - giving each part of their work and life a home.
With a number of people who came with challenges around time management, we explored how they best work - in short bursts, or longer stretches - and adjusted their calendar to work with their energy. A tip - if you have Focus Time available, increasing it to 4 hours and giving each time block a specific purpose can make a huge difference.
It’s simple, practical, and life changing.
Sometimes we think we need to find extra time to do the things we really want to do, or dig deep to find more energy.
But often we can simply use what we already have in a different way.
Life can feel dramatically different without adding or subtracting, simply by moving the pieces around.
Do you need more time?
Or do you need to rearrange the time you have?
Wishing you all a week of supportive scheduling,
