If you don’t know where to start for 2023, write a TODAY list

How are you feeling at the start of this new year?

Raring to go, or feeling like you want to take it slowly?

Keen to set a big goal for the year, or still emerging from the last one?

Off to a fast start, or worrying that everyone else is out of the blocks and you’re being left behind?

If you are feeling like you need a little time, you’re not alone.

January is a time of year that can bring up a lot of thoughts about big goals, fast starts and life changing resolutions.

It can be easy for us to get overwhelmed by ALL the things we could (or should) do.

To feel we need to identify ALL of the new possibilities - rather than picking up where we left off and starting with what we can see right now.

I’m generally a huge fan of zooming out, creating a vision for where I’m going, and then working towards it (my inner consultant loves a plan).

Right now, emerging from various winter coughs and colds, I’m feeling my way into the year instead.

I’m ignoring the temptation to set a big goal, to make a big to do list, to try and see the whole year from the dark mornings of January.

I’ve been making TODAY lists.

Each morning I sit down and think about the things I want to do that day.

The trick is to keep it short – no exhaustive to do lists. No trying to get it all down on paper.

Pick three things, and then do them.

The benefits of this approach?

You don’t get stuck.

You’re still in action while you figure out where you are and where you want to go.

You take steps, you move forward, you realise you don’t need to figure it all about before you start.

So, when you feel overwhelmed by not knowing, focus on what you need to do today to move things forward.

What’s on your today list?

And what feels good about taking it one day at a time?

Wishing you all a great week,
