Is there something you’ve been putting off starting?

Do you ever put off starting something because it feels like you don’t have time to do it properly?

Especially if you think it’s going to be a ton of work to get it right?

And you’re a little worried you won’t be able to do it?

Me too.

Over time I’ve learned what helps me is deciding to create a scrappy first draft.

It means getting something (anything!) down - emptying my head and seeing what’s there and what I’ve got to work with. I absolutely don’t have to finish it, and it doesn’t have to be good.

Most of the time it’s a mess, sometimes it’s better than expected, pretty much always it’s better to have started.

I have a scrappy first draft to work with and build on - and much more of a sense of that’s needed to get it done.

Taking the first step of anything we’ve been putting off can be the hardest part, so it helps to understand what works to get us out of our head and into practical action.

For me it’s permission to do it scrappily, but there are plenty of other options to choose from.

Perhaps it’s about how to make it as fun and interesting as possible, or as relaxing and low stakes as possible?

Maybe it’s scheduling a few hours so you can focus more deeply on it, or setting a timer for 5 minutes to empty your head?

It could be taking a step back to map out the process, or taking the smallest first step?

It could be about carving out time on your own, or partnering up with someone who can act as a soundboard, thinking or brainstorming partner?

Perhaps it helps to be in a favourite place, or a change of scene could be the spark that’s needed?

Is there something you’ve been putting off starting?

Would it help to create a scrappy first draft?

Or is there a different option to get you out of your head and into practical action?

Wishing you a week of progress, not perfection,
