What do you think?

A pink Post-it note being held up in front of a colourful painting. It has "What do you think?" written on it with black Sharpie.

Way back in the day, when I first stepped into a people leader role, I had to write myself this Post-it note.

It’s such a simple question, but one I found it really hard to remember to ask!

I had been so used to being rewarded for having the answer. For being the person that always knew what to do - or could figure out a way to do it. My default response was to share a solution, and I needed something to help me interrupt it.

The Post-it sat on my desk and tried its hardest to get my attention. It didn’t always succeed, but it definitely helped!

Making the transition from one role to another - from doing to leading, from being the expert to taking a coaching approach, from saying yes to everything to focusing on what only we can do - can be hard to navigate.

It’s not just a title change - it’s an identity shift and behaviour change. So, we need to give ourselves the best chance of remembering what we want to do differently.

A Post-it can be a great visual reminder, but anything that helps us with the rewiring process is a win - a scheduled pause, a daily review, an accountability buddy, or whatever has helped you make a successful change in the past.

As well as being patient with ourselves. We’re often changing a long-term habit - and it can take a while for it to stick!

Is there a new role that you need to step into?

What needs to change for you to make a successful transition?

And what would help you remember what you want to do differently?

Wishing you a successful week of change,
